Before you start
- WordPress 6.0 or newer, PHP 7.4 or newer
- The free Webkoding AgeWall plugin from wordpress.org — Pro attaches to it
- Somewhere outside the web root to store uploaded ID documents, and a retention period you have decided on
- A Yoti or VerifyMyAge account, if you want a provider to do the checking rather than reviewing documents yourself
What it does not do
- It does not run without the free AgeWall plugin from wordpress.org. Pro is the rules, the providers and the audit log — not a standalone gate.
- It does not include a Yoti or VerifyMyAge account. Those are yours, billed to you at their prices.
- It is not legal advice. It gives you per-country rules and an audit log; which age applies to you is a question for your compliance adviser.
- It does not verify identity for anything but age. It is not a KYC system.
What is in the download
The Pro add-on as a WordPress plugin ZIP. The free AgeWall plugin it attaches to is on wordpress.org.
GPL source. Pro attaches through documented hooks; nothing in the free plugin is locked or stubbed while it waits for a key — the paid code simply is not present until you install this.
Installing it
Install and activate the free AgeWall plugin first, then Pro beside it, then paste the licence key from your purchase email.
Before enabling document upload, confirm with your host where files can be written outside the web root. This is the one setting that is genuinely worth getting right the first time.
Rules, logs and the regulator
Order the rules from most specific to least. A country rule that sits below a catch-all never fires, and the symptom is a jurisdiction quietly being held to the wrong age.
Set a retention period you can defend. The audit log exists to show a regulator that checks happened; it is not a customer database, and keeping identity documents longer than you need them converts a compliance feature into a breach risk.
Test while logged out. An administrator passes everything, and an age gate that was only ever tested as an administrator has not been tested.

Common questions
What does the free plugin already do?
It enforces one age across the site and holds the line on the server rather than in the browser, which is the part most age gates get wrong. What it cannot do is tell you who passed, apply a different age per country, or show a regulator anything.
Do I have to review ID documents myself?
Only if you want to. Documents can be uploaded and reviewed by you, or the check can be handed to Yoti or VerifyMyAge — an account with them is yours, not ours.
Where are uploaded documents stored?
Outside the web root, so they are not reachable by URL, with a retention period you set. Holding identity documents indefinitely is a liability rather than a compliance measure.
Can one site hold different ages in different countries?
Yes. Rules are ordered and country-aware, so a site can hold 18 in most places and 21 where the law says so, without running two sites.
Does it guard WooCommerce checkout?
Yes — cart and checkout, not only the product page. An age gate that can be walked around by adding to cart from a category listing is not a gate.
