SplitVAT documentation

One order, two VAT rates, two invoices.

Before you start

  • WordPress 6.0 or newer, WooCommerce 8.0 or newer, PHP 7.4 or newer
  • WooCommerce tax classes already set up — SplitVAT splits by the rates you have defined, it does not invent them
  • A country or a trade where mixed-rate orders genuinely need separate invoices

What it does not do

  • It does not set your tax rates. It splits by the WooCommerce tax classes you have already configured, and a wrong class produces a confidently wrong invoice.
  • It does not split the payment. The money is taken once as one order; what is split is the documentation.
  • It does not tell you whether your jurisdiction requires this. It produces the document; whether that satisfies your tax office is a question for someone who knows it.

What is in the download

A WordPress plugin ZIP that detects mixed-rate orders and produces a compliant PDF invoice per rate. It builds on WooCommerce’s own tax configuration rather than replacing it.

GPL source, HPOS-compatible.

Installing it

Get WooCommerce tax classes right first. SplitVAT is only as correct as the rates it is told about, and a wrong class produces a confidently wrong invoice.

Then Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin, activate, and paste the licence key from your purchase email.

Mapping rates

Map every class you actually use, including the zero-rated one. An unmapped class is the usual cause of an order that fails to split when it should.

Test with a real mixed basket before you rely on it — one item at each rate, through a real checkout. A synthetic test order rarely exercises shipping tax, which is where mixed-rate orders get interesting.

Show one of the split invoices to your accountant. Compliance is a question about your jurisdiction, and the plugin can only produce the document; whether that document satisfies your tax office is a question for someone who knows it.

Common questions

Why would one order need two invoices?

Because some countries tax a meal and a drink differently, or a book and a bookmark. Where that is the case, a single invoice covering both rates is not compliant — however correct the totals are.

Do I have to create new tax classes?

No. It works from the WooCommerce tax classes you already use; the mapping tells it which class is which rate.

What does the customer receive?

A compliant PDF invoice per rate, rather than one document. Which is what their own accountant needs in order to reclaim correctly.

Does it change how the order is charged?

No. The money is taken once, as one WooCommerce order. What is split is the documentation, not the payment.

Is it HPOS-compatible?

Yes.
