Vela documentation
Before you start
- Your own video in HLS (.m3u8), hosted somewhere that sends CORS headers
- A catalogue you can export as JSON, or an API a developer can connect
- Node.js 18 or newer to build, plus LG’s webOS CLI and Samsung’s Tizen Studio to package
- LG and Samsung developer accounts, and real TVs to test on before you submit
A static web app you package for LG webOS and Samsung Tizen. It reads your catalogue feed and plays your HLS streams; the video hosting, accounts and payments are your own service.
What it does not do
- It has no user accounts, login or profiles. Vela is the viewing app; identity is your service’s job.
- It does not take payments or manage subscriptions.
- It plays clear HLS. DRM (Widevine, PlayReady) is not included and is integration work of its own.
- It has no admin panel or CMS. You produce the catalogue feed from whatever system you already run.
- It has not been through LG or Samsung store review on your behalf. Store approval depends on your content and your testing.
What is in the download
The full source of the app: the remote-control focus engine, the home, detail, player, live guide and mood screens, the catalogue layer, and the webOS and Tizen manifests.
A demo catalogue of Blender Foundation open movies, a README covering setup, branding and packaging, and docs/CATALOG.md describing every field of the feed.
Getting it running
Install Node.js 18 or newer, run npm install, then npm run dev. Use the arrow keys, Enter and Esc as the remote.
Set the app name, language and catalogue URL in src/config.js. Replace public/catalog.json with your own feed, or host the feed on your server and point CATALOG_URL at it.
Packaging for TVs
For LG, change the id in appinfo.json, then run npm run webos:package to build the .ipk with LG’s webOS CLI and install it on a TV in developer mode.
For Samsung, change the id in tizen/config.xml, run npm run tizen:stage, then package and sign dist/ with Tizen Studio and your Samsung certificate.
Test on every TV model year you intend to support before submitting. TV web engines differ more between years than desktop browsers do.

Common questions
Which TVs does it run on?
LG TVs with webOS 4 or newer and Samsung TVs with Tizen 4 or newer, roughly 2018 models onward, plus any modern browser. The bundle targets ES2015; older models may need extra polyfills.
Can I connect it to my existing backend?
Yes. Either generate the catalogue JSON from your backend, or replace the four functions in src/api/catalog.js with calls to your API. No screen code has to change.
What is the difference between Standard and Agency?
Standard covers one app under one brand, published on as many platforms as you like. Agency covers unlimited apps, including apps you build for paying clients. Neither lets you resell the source code itself.
Are the demo films included?
The demo uses open movies by the Blender Foundation under Creative Commons Attribution licences, with their posters and stills in the download. The demo streams are hosted by us for evaluation; replace them with your own content before you publish.
Will it pass LG and Samsung review?
It handles what reviewers check most often: Back behaviour, exiting from the home screen, remote-only navigation and media keys. Review also covers your content and how it behaves on specific models, so plan a round of testing on real TVs.
