Questions

Am I a private or business seller?

If you buy to resell, make things to sell, or sell regularly as a trade, you are a business seller in law, and eBay’s business fees apply.

Are optional upgrades still charged?

Yes. Listing upgrades such as a subtitle or promoted listings are paid extras for private sellers too.

Does HMRC see my eBay sales?

Platforms report sellers above certain thresholds to HMRC. Selling personal possessions for less than you paid is not usually taxable income, but trading is.

Where the figures come from

Fee schedule checked on 30 October 2026 against eBay UK’s private seller fees page. Platforms change fees with notice, and some (VAT on fees, promotions, account-level pricing) vary by seller — confirm the current figures in your own account before you rely on a result.
